I was invited back (again) onto The Projection Booth to discuss two film adaptation of a classic of Soviet era science fiction, Hard To Be A God, by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, with Mike White and Travis Crawford. The two film adaptations are quite different. The 1989 Hard To Be A God has a more conventional narrative, a minor role for Werner Herzog pretty sweet wigs, characters who look quite a bit like Christopher Lambert, and a remarkable landscape. Hard To Be A God (2013) is a more challenging film and is in some ways more faithful to the book. But it does have this great moment in subtitling history.
You can listen here.
If you do read the book, I suggest the 2014 translation by Olena Bomashenko.
